What is vf 124?

VF-124 was a United States Navy fighter squadron which was founded on August 1, 1950, and disbanded on October 1, 1994. The squadron's nickname was "Gunfighters" and its mission was to provide advanced tactical pilot training for F-8 Crusader pilots. VF-124 was based at Naval Air Station Miramar in California and was subordinate to the Commander, Naval Air Force, Pacific. The unit trained pilots in air-to-air combat skills, tactical formations, and night intercepts. VF-124 also conducted Fleet replacement pilot training for the F-8 Crusader. The unit carried out deployments to the Western Pacific and conducted numerous training exercises with other Navy and Marine Corps squadrons. During its history, VF-124 transitioned through several different fighter aircraft including the F-4 Phantom II and F-14 Tomcat. The squadron was officially deactivated on October 1, 1994, and its assets were transferred to the newly-formed VX-9 squadron.
